It's on a P reg 1996, Volvo 850 S, with the 5 cyl 2.4l engine.
I was driving home when I started to get a real bad misfire then it spluttered and stalled, got the AA out and after a while of checking spark plugs (Nš1 was firing), master lead (also nice healthy spark) etc. he finally removed the Distributor Cap and the rotor arm fell out in several pieces!
When he checked it he noticed the bolt that went into the end of the Cam was broken.

I can't afford to take it to a garage (would cost more than the car worth!) so wanted to try and do the work myself, so got a guy at work to knock me up a Drill guide to sit in where the Distributor cap fits and have drilled a centre pilot hole through the end of the bolt.
My question is What should the end of that bolt look like? I can't find any pictures of one in the internet and can't find any technical specs as to what size thread it would be (if indeed it's even a threaded bolt?)
Been looking on the net and it keeps showing a Rotor Arm with three screws on it as the one for my car? The AA man took the old one away so I couldn't see it. There's no where to screw them in so how does this work?

Can someone help? I don't want to drill it to 10mm to tap it out then find out it's a 9mm bolt! or that it's part of the cam I'm drilling!
I don't have a driveway or garage to work in so can't strip the engine ad remove the Cam, plus I wouldn't feel confident enough about resetting the cam cog/belts, timing etc.

Some pics of the cam end before drilling pilot hole, I'll try and get some new ones tomorrow.

1994... 940..non-turbo vacuum leak under dash

Hi to all,
I have a vacuum leak under the dash, when you accelerate the ac/heater blower slows down or appears to. I think what is happening is when you accelerate, the engine requires more vacuum and there is not enough to hold the dash diaphragm engaged and therefore it reverts to default which is "defrost/floor". I have checked the diaphragms I can see on the drivers side under the dash. The dual one checks OK on one port but unable to hold vacuum on the other one. Disconnected this one (plugged hose) and tried to pull vacuum.
Connected hand held pump to hose on dash side of line check valve.
I can draw about 5 inches of vacuum but it leaks down. Can crimp the line feeding the system under the dash after it is (reduced to new kind of hose) and can draw 25 inches of vac. and it will hold.
I am unable to locate the valve bank under the dash. I have taken the glove box out and it is not under there..
There has to be a valve bank because you have different colors going to each diaphragm.
If someone can point me in the direction of the valve bank in this auto and how to get to it I would greatly appreciate it. By the way this happens only when accelerating , the air stops coming from the dash registers and goes to the floor and defrost vents which is "default for Volvo" Sorry for the long post
katman104

After further reading I am beginning to think I do not have "Climate Control"
I have three controls....."Blower", "Function Selector", "Temperature Dial" and a recirculating button, and AC on/off button. I do not know if I would have a valve bank or not with this setup. All my different color hoses to the diaphragms may be coming from the "Function Selector" switch. Can anyone help me out here? Thanks in advance

I'll just say hello. I own a 2000 S70 SE, blk on blk with 143,000KM. Had it since it was all fresh and shiny out of the showroom.

I've only had a few problems with it, back window motor going 2x, brakes squeaking relentlessly for about a year, two dead batteries with 2 years, tiny pinhole in the fuel line that messed with the computer for a bit and some reaction with the rims and steel belted tires causing the tire to leak a bit.

We've just moved to Alberta from Ontario and the poor War Pony has to go through a safety. I hope I can find a mechanic that loves my car as much as the last one did.

On the battery issue, we solved the issue of the vehicle draining the battery while we were away by leaving a solar panel battery maintainer in it. It won't charge the battery but it sure does keep it from going flat.

This is my third Volvo, first one was a "Woody" 122, second was a 240DL. I think the lady that bought my 240DL is still driving it.

Anyway, glad to be here.

Replaced sunroof assembly: Calibration issues?

Long story short, I broke the sunroof on my mom's volvo v40 and bought a replacement assembly (the whole deal; motor, glass, and the tracks etc.) The roof worked fine before, and now that the new one is in, I'm having calibration problems.

Before the roof had 4 major positions: vent (propped in back), closed, open almost all the way (~4in left to go), and then open all the way. Say the roof was in the vent position, from what I recall, I could hold the switch to the open position for as long as I wanted, and all it would do is close the roof. This was the same for all of the positions. If it was closed and I held the open switch it would move to the next position (open almost all the way) and it would never move to the next position until I released the button and pressed it again. This was true for all positions if I recall correctly. I suppose I could call them presets.

Now the roof has no presets, and wont stop in any of the old positions. For instance if the roof is slid all the way back, and I try to close it, it will keep going until it is in vent position with the back propped, and in order to close it I have to fiddle with the switch going back and forth while looking at the top of the roof to make sure it seated correctly, and that is only possible because the switch is not screwed to the car yet. The only thing I see controlling this is that little black box that the two connectors plug into which tucks up to the right of the motor and switch. It has no buttons that I see, but it does have a slightly exposed plastic gear looking knob.

For what it's worth, I have tried the original box, as well as the new one and had the same results.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I leave tomorrow afternoon and this has t be fixed as the car is not mine (I'm just fixing the mess I made).

Thank you for your time,
-Alex
