hello people.

Im in boston, i drive a 97 850 glt. third volvo for me, love it. it just got banged up by an 08 bmw 7 series....so its a good time for me with a nice check from insurance to go looking for my next car, which i want to be and 850 wagon...ive done alot of reading but cant seem to get my pea-brain round one thing...is it possible to get the 97 R wagon in AWD? or was it just the normal turbo that came in awd? also, im not seeing any cars listed as awd for 97, so im thinking either theyre really rare, or people dont know what they have...are there any distinguishing characteristics or numbers to look for? id love any helpful advice, thanks

Welcome to the forum and I don't think the AWD version was available until 1998.

aha. in th wiki entry on the 850 they say that there was one awd in the 1997 850 lineup. maybe im misinterpreting it, its somewhat confusing.

so what do you guys think about the 850 r vs the v70 r? seems like the awd thing is definitely better, yet somehow the 850 manages to be a hell of alot cooler, no?

In North America, the V70 R AWD has 261hp and awd and only comes with an auto tranny. The 850 R has with auto tranny 236hp and with manual 250hp,
and both the 850 R manual and auto have fwd not while the V70 has awd.

Since the R didn't come out at the same time as the V70, which came out after the 850 R, the V70 R AWD should be significantly more expensive. So if the V70 is only a little more in money, it must either have high mileage or other associated issues to decrease its price.

Another related awd vs fwd issue is the added maintenance costs for the awd. The awd tranny is going to be significantly more expensive to maintain. If the previous owner didn't take care of it, the tranny could be a lot of $.

As for lag, I cannot speak on personal experience, but I assume that the V70 R should have a pinch more lag due to the higher hp from a nearly identical turbo charger, and the added weight and drive train loss to the awd.

In North America, the 850 R is significantly faster then the V70 R AWD. The V70 has a 0-60 of low 7's while the 850 R has a 0-60 in the high 6's, or about a .5 second quicker 0-60 which is quite a difference.

In North America, the R as well as the Turbo models have rather stiff suspensions, which a few loved, and many hated. As a result, Volvo seceded and began running a higher profile, lower performance tire and a softer suspension. So the V70 should ride a little softer, but also does poorer on the skid pad as a result of the suspension changes including tires and the added weight.

Performance things you can do include an exhaust, chip and air intake. And don't forget proper maintenance. You'd be surprised how poorly these cars run when you don't take care of them, and just how much power they produce when you do.

Hi I'm K. Mikael Wallin. I built the "MiniMerc" a 3/4 scale version of a 1951 Mercury out of a 1967 Volvo 122 s Amazon a while back. Next will be a phantom vagon on a similar theme. I added pix in my album should anyone be interested.

Hi,
I have a problem with my 740 estate, it's a 1988 model and I changed the rotor arm and cap as a switch was hanging from underneath which, when I removed it, broke one of the wires. Since putting it back on I've been unable to start it and there's NO spark from the coil which is new-please help.

Phil

Did you repair the broken wire? Did you solder it?

No, I replaced the distributor cap which had a switch attached, then a mobile mechanic checked why it wouldn't start and found there was no spark at the coil. He advised changing it which I did but when the car wouldn't start I checked the coil the same as he did and there's still no spark!

Could the relay be at fault? I can't get anyone to come and look at the car at the house-unless there's someone local on the forum who could come up.

Thanks sulley007, Phil

Where are you located? Can you meter the power wire to the coil to check voltage?

Default G'day

Hello everyone, I’m Boz for Perth, Australia. I am considering purchasing a 2002 VOLVO S60 MY02 AWD that has 157,000 km on the clock. What I would like to know is this:

· Does this model have a history of technical problems?,
· Is it worth purchasing considering is high kms? and
· What would be the present value of this vehicle?

Thanks guys.
Boz.
