Default S60-Ignition coils

I have a 2001 S60 with 119,000 miles on it. A couple of days my check engine light came on and the engine started 'quivering' and seemed as though it would choke down when I stopped. I took it to the local Volvo experts, not the dealership, and I was told that the ignition coils needed to be replaced, all 5.
He told me the car was sort of misfiring and the coils were cracked and rotten. They are made of plastic. I was also wondering if I used mid grade gas as opposed to premium, could this cause a false reading because of being gummed up! Thanks for your input!
I am also experiencing a hard bump in the engine area when I accelerate after stopping. I was told this was a problem with the transmission and it can't be repaired and I may soon have to be replace the transmission. Has anyone ever experienced this.

Moxie:
It doesn't seem like all five coils would go out at the same time. Sometimes you can see if they are shorting out if you take off your coil cover, park the car in a dark place and run it. If there is a short causing it to miss, you may be able to see the arcing with the hood up while it is running. If the coils are "cracked and rotton", you will be able to see that when you pull the cover off.

It isn't likely that it is caused by the fuel, unless you loaded up with a really bad batch. Check your plugs; if the miss is coming from fouled plugs, you may be able to see it.

I would check the code to see if your oxygen sensor is up to snuff. Sometimes the check engine light is tripped by it and it can be sending a bad, or no signal to the computer which can cause it to run rough.

I have never had a Volvo automatic, but I have had a similar thing happen when there was a problem with the lockup converter.

David.
