Default Steering problem with my 1990 240DL Wagon

I have noticed a thumping sound when I turn my wheel after I start the car. It only happens when I turn the wheel a little, and does not affect the steering too much. I do notice that when it does thump, the steering is a little loose, but is ok when I turn my wheel further. Could this be a bad bushing in my steering column or a bad linkage problem to the steering rack. Maybe it is my steering wheel?

Ed - Can you give us a little more info? Do you hear the sound if the wheel is turned in either direction? Do you hear the sound constantly or only when you are actually turning the wheel? Do you hear it when you are driving and at a standstill?

Thanks
