Default Power Steering Fluid

On older GM cars pre-1980 I would use Dexron-II automatic transmission fluid in the power steering pump and never had any issues. Can I do this to Volvos or do they have special seals to prohibit you from doing this? I know new vehicles are very specific as to what they get or you end up with leaky seals.

A Chilton manual says I can use type "F" ATF. I don't care much for Chilton manuals so anyone have any additional input on this?
