Default S60r

I am a long time Vovo owner - 2 850s over 15 years. I am thinking of buying a 2004 S60R for $23,000 with 31,000 miles. Anyone have any thoughts about problems with this model and year or the price tag? Of course the R is what I really am looking for this time.

Thanks,

Al

Smile Great car

I personally have not owned a Volvo before, but have driven a few, and my parents have owned a couple(the ones I've driven) an S40 and an 05 S60. I recently just made a purchase of an 2004 S60 R, it had 32,000 miles and the dealer was asking 26,900. I paid 23,500 so yes the price you're talking about for the mileage is very good and appropriate. On a personal note let me just say it is all I have dreamed it to be, I followed this car from its conception 5yrs ago. It handles amazingly with the AWD system and the power is more than enough!! I can't offer you any thoughts on any mechanical/electrical issues you may have as I haven't owned mine long enough to know yet or run into them. Best luck with your decision, but I will say if you get it you will NOT regret it!

Default 1 More thing

Sorry... one final thought. Since they have stopped making the R, and will stop with the S60 all together in 2009, this car is going to become increasingly rare, and harder to find and hold on to, so if you have the ability to get one now, I'd take advantage of it!

The R cars are nice! My personal favorite is in the V70 R with a six speed manual. I have seen some nice examples of them with about 50K on the clock for a little less than 20K, but your's is in the 30s and will command a bigger price. The local dealer has a new one, a black '06 S60 R on the lot for about $29K if I remember right. It has been sitting on the lot for two years and they have been unable sell it. It has an automatic and tan leather,
David.

It really depends on what you want. Most people who are drawn to the Rs are for one of two reasons. Either they think it has more luxury or they think it has more performance. The car does have more luxury but you can get a loaded t5 and get the same thing. As for performance, I am not a fan of the R. HP to the wheels is the same as a T5. With a simple retune a T5 will put down 20 more hp than an R. If you are set on an R though you may want to consider a MY06+ as they had the preloaded differential and a less problematic bevel gear set up

Unfortunately I disagree with you:

The s60R stock have 300HP. The regular T5 have 220HP. With mods in the regular T5 you reach the 270HP, maybe 280. This is even 20HP less than s60R stock.

The S60R with mods can reach 400HP... so the difference is huge. The only bad thing is this beauty is discontinued, so if you need some serious part, you will have problems find it.

The S60R dynos less HP at the wheels than a T5. Beyond that due to an issue with the crank it struggles for 400BHP which is bearly 300whp. Sorry owned too many and built too many to fall for that Volvo line

Volvospeed are you saying you are going to lose 100 hp from the transfer between the engine and the rear wheels? That seems like alot.

Are the mods all bolt on to get to 400+ hp?

PS - we have a new feature where you can set up an album in your user cp and upload pics of Volvo's and they will appear on the home page randomly.

Thanks!!

I have dynoed 3 S60Rs and they were between 209 and 215hp. I just assumed Volvo uprated their claims till I pulled an engine and dynoed it. My 2005 made 209whp and 306BHP. This is pretty typical for an AWD. The sidewinder/haldex set up is pretty lossy. As for 400hp bolt ons will get you to 400bhp, but not 400whp. I have a 650bhp engine that I only slightly detuned, and it barely makes over 450whp

What "cubanomox" has said is true. I own a 1998 S70T5 and a 2004 S60R. Both have been modified and the results are in line with what this member has stated.

the discontinued model is the s60r, not the s60.
