Hello,

The shift knob button gets stuck and won't release occasionally. Would a simple WD40 be good enough to make it smooth?

I would have thought so ! Just do not use it to excess. Cannot do much harm IMHO

have you ever spilled something down onto the center console? if you have your best bet would be to take the center console apart(pretty easy)and clean/lube the catch under the shifter. if you have any questions, i can email you the instructions to take apart the console.
