Volvo is not usually known for building lust-worthy performance machines. Generally their products are safe, solid and secure, important attributes to be certain but they're hardly the stuff dreams are made of. However, the addition of performance-tuned V60 and S60 Polestar models is spicing things up for the Staid Swede.
These cars made their big U.S. debut at the Chicago Auto Show. Only 120 of the ultra limited-edition sportswagon and sedan will be sold in America.
Compared to less rambunctious trim levels these cars feature a number of important upgrades. They've received aerodynamic enhancements in the form of new splitters that help minimize wind resistance and provide additional down-force.
More importantly the cars benefit from an enhanced structure and new springs that are a whopping 80 percent stiffer than the ones that prop up the S60 R-Design model. High performance shock absorbers dampen unwanted movement; the cars ride on unique 20-inch wheels. Brembo brakes bring everything to a safe stop.
Under the hood V60 and S60 Polestar models are powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six. Thanks to a new twin-scroll turbocharger, an upgraded intercooler and special engine management software it puts out 345 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. A generous 2.5-inch exhaust system helps the force-fed six breathe.
Power is sent to all four wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission that can be shifted via paddles. The cars should be able to blast-off from zero to 60 miles an hour in 4.7 seconds.
Polestar-ified V60 and S60 vehicles are offered in two special colors: Black Sapphire and Rebel Blue. The cars are scheduled to go on sale in the U.S. this June at select Volvo dealers. Naturally pricing and additional details will be announced closer to their on-sale date.
