Any way to get a spare key without breaking the bank?
Bought a used 2009 Volvo S40 2.4i last week, and apart from a problem with the trunk latch (replacement part is in the mail), the only pressing issue right now is that I only have one key for it (used car dealership was only given one when it was sold to them). I called my local Volvo dealer, and they said that a new key from them would run me $280. The only way I could get it cheaper through them is to find my own and bring it... but we won't know for sure that it's compatible until they attempt to register it to my car, and that is going to run $150 whether or not it actually works.
I just need a second key to keep at home in case I'm away from the house and my car needs to be moved (which actually happened today). I know that creating spares of the key blade is cheap (planning on making two spares of that, just so that I don't totally screw myself if I accidentally lock my keys inside), but is there any way to get a spare that can actually activate the ignition without leaving a gigantic hole in my wallet?
