Despite what bottled water dealers want you to believe, tap water is safe to drink.
For the avoidance of doubt I will shout that again TAP FROM NAIROBI WATER COMPANY IS SAFE TO DRINK.
Don't waste money boiling it! Boiling only makes the water taste funny.
However,if your taste buds are as sharp as mine, you will detect an underlying taste of dust in Nairobi tap water. For that reason, you can buy a filter from the supermarkets and filter your drinking water...that's what I do.
So why do people believe that Nairobi's tap water is unsafe?
I think that comes from an incident in the 1990s when some crook sold chalk dust to the City Council claiming that it was chlorine.
The truth of the matter is that YES the Council bought the chalk dust BUT the chalk was never added to the water. Chalk dust is Calcium Carbonate and it is is not soluble in water. If you add it,the water turns white...like milk.
During the incident, the council had to order a new consignment of chlorine for treating the water. While waiting for the new supply, the old stock got finished and the Ng'ethu treatment works was shut down for two days.
The whole city went dry and the Town Clerk called Ng'ethu and ordered them to release untreated water. The officer on duty at the site refused to follow the orders...in a long argument with the Town Clerk, the water officer told the Clerk to drive up to Ng'ethu and turn on the water with his own hands!!
Of course the town Clerk did not go. Two days later, the chlorine arrived, water was treated and released to the taps.
