so i have an 1980 Volvo 242, 4 speed manual with overdrive. sometimes the overdrive just cuts out wile im driving, ive noticed it usually happens when its hot out or if I need to go into overdrive more than 2 times. is this normal or is there something i can do so it won't ever cut out? its been doing this ever since i got it.

The overdrive just cutting out doesn't sound like normal operation. Could be a number of things including the OD switch.

Probably electrical. The OD switch wiring from the gear knob gets a lot of flexing and is usually the problem, or some other possible solutions here, on this IPD listing..

i also forgot to mention that the OD was re routed to the rear demister switch next to the fog lamp switch instead. but probably the same wear.

You'll have to un-do someone else's patch job. If you don't need the car to be original, you could just trace and repair the wires.

You don't need a defroster in California do you?
