so i have an 1980 Volvo 242, 4 speed manual with overdrive. sometimes the overdrive just cuts out wile im driving, ive noticed it usually happens when its hot out or if I need to go into overdrive more than 2 times. is this normal or is there something i can do so it won't ever cut out? its been doing this ever since i got it.

Probably electrical. The OD switch wiring from the gear knob gets a lot of flexing and is usually the problem, or some other possible solutions here, on this IPD listing..

thank you very much, i was thinkin it might be electric, my car needs some redone. ive heard that sometimes the connection gets broken so yeah it'll cut out. ill have to tear into it and find out!

You'll have to un-do someone else's patch job. If you don't need the car to be original, you could just trace and repair the wires.

You don't need a defroster in California do you?
