An intermittent problem just started (1992 940 SE 4-door). Several times upon startup, the ABS and SRS stayed on. Trying to put it in gear or change gears results in a noise, not quite grinding but similar. Under the hood, I don't see anything out of the ordinary, but I do hear the 2 front belts making a louder than usual noise. If I turn the car off, it may or may not restart with the same issue. However, if I turn it off, then change gears with the car off, so far it has gone away. The fan belt was replaced about 6 months ago, and this problem only started this week.

It may or may not be related, but the thick up arrow light comes on and stays on frequently. Revving the engine slightly makes it go away temporarily. This has been going on for over a year, but the mechanic hasn't been worried about it.

I do the slow start issues others have mentioned when first starting it and it sounds like a possible transmission fluid issue based on what others have posted. I mention it because I don't know if this is part of the problem.

I plan on taking my car into a mechanic as soon as I get a backpay issue check, but that is likely to take at least 2 - 4+ weeks.

Is it safe to drive? I can't afford to park it until the check comes in, but I don't want to drive it if it is something major that gets worse from being driven.

I did drive it once with the ABS/SRS light issue and other than the weird noise when changing gears (Park, Reverse, Drive), it drove fine; it might have a taken a slightly longer time to break, but I am not sure.
