Hey all,

My daughter has a 1993 240 sedan with an automatic transmission. It has just started to exhibit the following symptoms:

1) The shifter will not lock into park;
2) The key will not release from the steering column;
3) Prior to 1 & 2 she noticed that the button on the shifter knob would sometimes not depress and release the shifter from the park position.

She's taken it to a local shop which works on Volvo's in Rapid City (apparently not a lot of Volvo's in South Dakota) and after looking at it the mechanic determined it needed a new shift assembly at a cost of around $800.

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this and maybe had an idea for a lower cost solution.

Thanks in advance for any input.

I would try taking the cover off the shift lever assembly and inspect for broken parts and while there spray the linkage with WD 40. If the car isn't in Park the key probably won't come out of the steering column as a safety function. Fix the park and the key will remove.
