1995 volvo 850 check engine light?

my customers wagon runs fine, but when my customers start the engine it makes a weird sound (the same sound you might here when a UFO zips by in movies)... also, the check engine light comes on and stays on throughout the duration of my customers trip... any ideas on what could be wrong maxisys ms908p?...
