Hi:

I just bought a 1997 960 with 145k. I drove it. I went through the maintenance records, I checked under neath and engine. All seemed well. I started it in my driveway a half hour ago. The ABS light and SRS light began blinking intermittently. Giving trottle made the light s stop blinking. As soon as idle , resumed blinking, then total engine shut down. Nothing but indicator warning lamps when I turn the key.Can anyone help me?

I'm trying to remain calm, but I feel, I missed something.

Thank you.

Sounds like the magic of computers.

You'll need someone to check for codes and then isolate the problem. Could be tedious but you'll have to go through the whole process, step by step until the computer is happy and will allow your car to run again.

Gone are the simple days of carbs and points. We have more efficient, less poluting cars with parts that break and cannot be repaired. How big is the carbon footprint now?

PS, I hate compact flourescent bulbs too.

Old fashioned fix for a modern car.

Shoulda thought of that one too. A computer needs reliable power. The car should have shown low voltage on the meter or have been slow to crank over if it was running on a discharging battery.

Human nature is sometimes to assume the worst...

Thanks Bill.
I had one other moment of confussion. When I had the alternator replaced, I had the tech change the oil and filter. Additionally, I asked him to change the transmission fluid and filter. The oil change was no problem, but he told me that he was unable to drain the tranny fluid and unable to drop the transmission plate to get to the filter. Is this accurate? How do you check the transmission fluid level? I have never heard of this. Thank you for replying.

The only car I've hear of with a 'sealed for life' transmissin is the Chevrolet Epica.

For the Chevy, it's a job only the dealer can do - even Mr. Transmission says no thanks.

Sealed "Hah"

Dear Bhart:

Sorry about referencing your father. I thought that line about a sealed transmission was faulty. I'm ordering a repair manual for the S90 and the 960. Both are 1997. I've not seen a Haynes manual listed for those 2 models. Perhaps Chiltons. Do you know of any other manuals available?
Thanks for responding.

A quick Google search of "sealed transmission" brings up references from Ford, Chev, BMW, Mercedes. Not sure about Volvo but they are part of the Ford group.

There are two schools of thought; no user serviceable parts inside so best not to let anyone have access or with profit margins on cars so slim (apparently) any way to get them back into the dealership for specialized work and/or parts adds to the bottom line.

A manual is good for reference, even if you never plan to do any work yourself. You can speak to a shop tech with confidence knowing what's legit and what's not.

Here's a link to some 9 series info; http://www.swedishbricks.com/700900FAQ/FAQSummary1.html

But your right, very little info on newer, big Volvos.

How about an older, big Volvo;

Bhart:

Thanks for the picture of the 164. In 1977, 3 of use drove that car from Annapolis ,MD to Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Brought a smile to my face.
In February it will be 8 years since my dad passed. Thanks again for the assist and the memory jolt.

Marc

Just imagine the fun when your 12 year old Prius suffers the unexplainable total shutdown.

It'll be just like a computer - drivers no longer supported by the operating system. Time to upgrade the hardware and throw the old unit away.
