The tailgate lock on my V70 GLT will not unlock remotely. If it locks when I lock the doors with the key fob, I need to crawl in the back & unlock it to open the hatch. I took the car in to an independent Volvo service center and was told the master switch needs to be replaced. Is the master switch the likely culprit or should I focus on the solenoid?

There was a recall on certain years/models. You may inquire about this with your dealers. The lock is part of the central locking system. I think there may be a relay for this so check your owners manual to make sure that isn't the case.
