Our 2000 XC AWD SE, nearly 80k miles, has started making a shuddering, thunking noise when we make sharp turns at very slow speeds, e.g., turning out of a parking place.

A garage says that we need new struts, front & back, and claims that the compromised struts are starting to cause uneven tire wear.

Has anyone experienced something like this before?

Thanks!

The problem is the strut bearing and seat mounting assembly. They wear out and the resultant play causes the clunking on those slow maneuvers. I'm surprised you also didn't hear a clunking when going over a chuckhole or a bump, as this is also a symptom of sturt mounts needing replacement.

Yes I have and replaced the entire front suspension including control arms, struts, strut setas, spring, mounts, etc...and make sure you replace the sway bar links--cheap fix but a problem source. And then get a front end aligmnent from a really good shop!!!
