Hi all,

i m a proud owner of a 850 waggon summum 1995 2.5 20v. 247 000 kms.

Yesterday it make me something strange at a red fire, engine was at 900 rpm normally, and suddenly down to 500 rpm and up to 800 rpm and down to 400 rpm then again and... CUT. (no power if you accelerate) If you start again right after, the engine start ! but cut few second after. If you wait 5 or 10 min, engine start, seems ok... run at 900 rpm normally, you take the road and after 1 miles same thing ! CUT.

Your point of view please ? I m lost...

p.S : When the engine is running there is no specific light on the board...

It make it hot or totally cold ! I have try this morning cold it start and cut 30 sec after but it cut directly with no up and down rpm. It sounds like something die the other day but what...

fuel pressure disease...? electronic ? vaccum leak ? Speed sensor crank dead ?? what else ?

Thanks a lot.

Bonjour,

Je dois parle en anglais; It sound like a mystery right now.

You have suggested fuel pressure disease...? electronic ? vaccum leak ? Speed sensor crank dead .
-Fuel pressure is a small possibility. It would normally limit your full power acceleration but a small amount of water in the gas could cause a similar problem. Add some methyl hydrate (125cc) to the tank and see.
-Electronic could be lots of things. You may need to have a garage check for codes. You may not have a problem severe enough to trigger a code or, if a previous owner was dishonest, someone may have diabled the 'check engine' lamp. Will the check engine light come on if you turn the key without starting the engine?
-Vaccum leaks mostly come on slowly and will usually only affect the engine at idle speed, not under power.
-Crank sensor dead would mean the engine dosen't run at all.

Hopefully your car has been regularly maintained (spark plugs, fuel filters, etc) so you won't have a garage insisting that this all be done before they start searching for the stalling problem.

well yes...you right it seems to be a mystery ! The manual check with the light does not exist on this model. It s 1995 from october it mean it s a 1996.

So i m oblige to go to a Volvo garage and make a check with the computer.

a small amount of water in the gas ?? how this can happen the car sleep is in a private underground garage every day.

Let s see the error code tomorrow.... :(

Thanks Bhart.

Water in the gas can happen from a gas station with poor quality gas. If you fill the tank in your car when the main tanks of the station are being re-filled, it can stir up sediment and water (gas floats on water) that you, unknowingly, pump into your car.

Just one possile theory.

The fact that you say it happens hot or cold would suggest it's not a sensor. If it happens regularly it will be easier for a mechanic to find the problem. Be prepared for some trial and error and hope the problem is found quickly.

I just need a diagnostic from volvo...I ll repair myself ! i dont have the computer to read error code for a 1996.

This error will appear as an injection problem normally ? the gas/water thing ! If yes, i ll explain this point of view with methyl hydrate.

Just methyl hydrate and it kill the water ? in case they want to charge me empty tank process and washing injection !

It's possible the code will be more generic since it probably just recognizes a missfire at the computer.

Water is only one of many possibilities. Don't suggest anything top the mechanic, let him follow the course he sees best. If he doesn't know the condition of the car, he may start with spark plugs, gas filter, etc..

Adding methyl hydrate will not affect the running of the car. Chemically, it will 'surround' the water molicule and allow it to pass through the fuel system.

If your shop recommends a fuel injection cleaning, it's a good thing to do at 250,000km. I have had it done to a couple of my cars and it's made a huge difference in power and fuel economy. It cost me $80.CDN and it's worth it.
