Hi all, new to the forum and new to volvos. Have a newly purchased 1994 850 wagon non turbo with 157k. Have a tapping noise top of the motor, like a lifter tapping (longing for the days of adjustable rocker arms). Is this maybe the cam tappet and if so, is that adjustable, does it need to be replaced? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

Tapping does eventually go away, but takes several minutes. Oil changed about 3 wks ago before I bought it Mobil I (not syn) 10w30. Not sure on the filter. Been thinking about an oil change and putting some synthetic in there. What type of oil filter would you recommend, volvo oem??

A product that has silenced noisy engines for me is General Motors EOS suppliment. Not sure what it is but it works well.

GM uses it from new in certain models and as a fix for noisy engines. I wouldn't normally pour stuff into the engine but a close friend/mechanic suggested it to me a few years back in a 4L Jeep ehgine that had an EXTREMELY loud clack from a lifter on cold starts. After a few days in the sump, the noise went away. The engine had EOS added at every second oil change and never complained, despite a life of reline shifts and sustained highway passing and speeding.

better

got an oem oil filter and some 10w30 mobil 1 synthetic in there today. The tapping has quieted down somewhat to the point where I think any noise I have may be normal. I will keep an ear on it and see how it goes :D
