I'm currently considering a v70r awd for $3995. The car is at a dealer and appears to be in good condition. This will be my first actual volvo (own 2005 ford 500 which is based on volvo chassis but with ford engine) I am able to do my own mechanical work and have done some research. The question I have is: Is the AWD system truly as prone to failure and expensive to fix as the internet would have me believe?

Vololov, good question. I'm a Service Advisor at a Volvo dealership, have been for 3 years. I think the 98 is a great car and you should have no fears about the AWD system. Fact is, cars break and there's no crystal ball to tell you it's not gonna happen. But, as I said, the 98 V70R is a great car and I would buy it with full confidence.
