I own a 1993 850. Its a wonderful car, but it does not have ABS. the braking systems I was looking at were around 2,000 dollars- that is nuts. No way. So, my question is, would I be able to buy a later model junk volvo and snag its brakes? Or should I buy new ones? I am trying to modify the car with performance parts, but I have driven later 850s and they seem to have excellent brakes. Any help is appreciated. God Bless.

If ABS is that important to you I think I'd be inclined to get a car with them installed. You'd have to pull and retro fit quit a bit of parts and electronics IMO. Maybe just go with the aftermarket high performance rotors and brake pads and put in metal brake lines in the entire system to firm up pedal and response.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. The way my brakes work now, I know how hard I can depress the pedal before they lock up, but thats the problem- they lock up. Would performance rotors and pads help in that regard?

Also, not really related to the brakes, I am looking to improve the handling and suspension. For the suspension, would higher performance springs, shocks and struts do the trick? or should I get a kit or something? Any recommendations?

Thanks so much for your help.

I would replace the car if you are set on ABS. #1 this is a safety device that I wouldn't want to retro fit to a car #2 the cost would probably out weigh the return vs. just upgrading your car IMO.

Im pretty sure all 850's have ABS standard. maybe you abs light is burned out. 93 brakes are no different than newer one except the newer ones have 5 lugs instead of four, you would also have to change all four hubs and wheels. Have had 2 93's and both had abs. the stopped exactly the same as my 2 97's. Same pads, same diameter, same thickness, same master cylinder. there has to be something wrong with yours, cheap pads, warped rotors, bad proportioning valve? bald tires?
