The tint is so dark it is a challenge to see anything at night if there are no headlights in your mirror. Try to back out of a parking slot in the dark or worse yet, dark rain.

Has anyone considered this issue? I understand security and sun block and so on, but the degree of tint is too much.

I love my XC60 for all that it is and is capable of doing. There is not a better all around cross over on the market.

Mr. Admin. I do not follow your comment.

My XC60 came from the faqctory with the premium package, winter package and a 3.2 FWD. The window tint is factory dark. What can I do to lessen the tinr or replace the glass? Is there a Volvo glass panel for the XC50 that is not tinited at all?

The xc60 I had a test drive in had the privacy glass but even in daylight I felt that it restricted vision. I had a Citroen C4 Picasso a couple of years ago with similar dark glass but for some reason it didn't seem to be such an issue...perhaps it was just a shade lighter? Anyway, I haven't specified it for my new xc60 that I'm picking up on Friday (yippee)...the dark tints do look better though!

Thanks Mac, you'll love the car. Is it a front wheel drive?

If you would please, let me know about the rear window glass. I cannot get any response from Volvo if there is a non tint glass for the rear window available? It is not in their parts books, but my knowledgeable sales rep thinks if you do NOT get the premium packge you would not get tinted windows.

Hi Tom, I was seriously thinking about the two wheel drive version as it has lower emissions and annual road tax is cheaper..but in the end decided to go with the 4WD version SE LUX Premium D5 205PS (petrol versions here are pretty rare due to high running costs and would be difficult to sell on). The XC60 is available in UK with either clear (or slightly tinted?) glass all round or dark privacy glass all windows except front side glass (which would be illegal). My XC60 has clear glass all round including rear window .....so it must be available from somewhere? All round laminated glass is also an option but that may be standard in the US anyway:)

Anything is possible, with money.

Lesser models should have tint all around similar to the front glass. You could change it over but, if you've ever had to pay for a windshield, imagine the cost of changing all the side and rear glass! Trim parts may also be necessarry. Prohibitive for most of us.

Might be something you'll have to learn to live with.

The cost of being cool.....

I would only replace the rear window and leave the side windows tinted as they are. I think you're right in that I just going to have to live with it.

Dark tinted rear window on XC60

Tom -- Larry here.
I've also been complaining to my dealer about the overly dark tinted rear window.
I even called customer service at Volvo America and all that comes back is "this is the way the car is designed"

In addition, unlike the Lexus, BMW, etc. the rearview mirror does NOT have a button to disengage the dimming function, so at night, both the rear window plus the dimmed rear view mirror together really create a problem.

I was curious to know how you went about obtaining a non-tinted rear window?
Also, did your dealer cover this or did you have to pay for it yourself.

Would appreciate any info you can provide.
Thanks,

Rear glass tint

I found the glass part number form another forum member from the UK. He took delivery on a new XC60 and had chosen not to have the tinted glass.

I passed along the number to the service manager at my local dealer who had claimed the clear glass was not being found in their part search. That could be as the car is so new and only the basic model would have it or as I found, a foreign model.

The dealer quoted me a very high price for the glass, which had to be special ordered and shipped in from Sweden. I understood that but balked when they quoted me $250 for a local glass company to come in and install the new glass.

I approached my local body repair shop and they did the job with a modest markup from their wholesale pricing on the glass and a much reduce install cost.

I like my dealer and the service manager, but he works from job chartrs or something. It was well worth my expense to get it done. I have the original glass stored carefully in the box from Sweden.

I hope this helps. Send me an email if you have any questions. eta1 at fuse dot net.

Volvo doesn't offer tint because there are so many different percentages one could get it would be an almost infinite number of choices.Find an installer that uses 3M, Huper-Optik and Llumar, those are supposed to be the good tints. The ones with the bubbles are the cheap-o tints.
I have the screen in the back window; i like it. I bought the side screens but they didn't fit perfectly enough for me. I'll sell you them for half off if you want them!

Thanks for your advice. How does your car look with the tinted glass on the rear windows but not on the rear hatch?

Honestly, I do not notice the difference andy more than the clear rear window looks the the clear windshield. The tint on the sides is a nice dark shade and great when driving on the highway.

I totally agree: the tint on the XC60 is way to dark

Hi Tarnold - I just got a 2013 XC60 and also find that the windows are tinted way to dark. I feel like I'm driving a windowless van, especially at night. It's so bad that I'm actually going to have the tinted windows replaced with clear ones. It's going to cost me crazy money, but I really find my current situation just plain dangerous. Regards, Mike

I find even the tint on the side windows to be dangerous. When I look out to the righht side at night, I see little. So I'm having all five tinted windows replaced. The two that I could probably not bother with are the left back door, and the left cargo area window because i don't think one actually turns around to look thru those windows. But I think it would probably look pretty odd to have only those windows tinted, while all the others are clear.

I use the side mirrors a lot versus over the shoulder. The tint for the back seat is ok by me. Drive the car a bit more before replacing the side windows. The rear window was the most important to me. I think you will save some bucks with a little more time in the car.

I recently bought a used 2015 Volvo XC60. I love the way the car drives - but the dark tinted rear view mirror is horrible.
Could you tell me the parts # for ordering the clear glass replacement from Sweden? It is so hard to drive at dusk or night with that dark rear window.
Hope you can help me, Chris

I live in the Cincinnati area and have a 2017 XC60 T5 Dynamic AWD. Is there ANY after market glass shop that can replace my overly dark rear windshield with a non-tinted one? Anywhere?? Volvo tells me they can only order the part number on file for my trim level - which is not a solution. Safelite Auto Glass NEVER calls back.

Just purchased my second Volvo XC60 T6 Momentum which has the same darkly tinted rear hatch window, making it especially difficult to see out of at night. I have spoken to the dealership as well as multiple after market window tinting representatives, and there seems to be no option for removing or correcting this one flaw in an otherwise nearly perfect model. Didn’t stop me purchasing, but I do think it’s an unusual flaw for a vehicle that is renowned for its safety features.
