I've been trying to troubleshoot some AC problems lately and I ran into an interesting clue lately.

It started with very poor cooling when idling mainly was very hot...

I got through the summer last year but this year it got worse. It seemed like it would take like 10-15 minutes to even start cooling. I don't mean that it would just take forever to cool down. I mean that it would blow hot air for about 10 minutes and then suddenly it would start blowing much cooler air and all would be fine.

Then it got to the point where it just wasn't cooling as well as it should be ever.

I tried checking the pressures but all I had was the cheap gauge that came with one of those recharge kits and something didn't seem right the few times I checked it so I've been waiting until I can get my hands on a good set of guages. FYI, when I first checked it the needle was way in the red, like around 150. Then another time it was down to 70 which was in the yellow.

I'm in Texas and today was pretty bad and out of desperation I turned on the rear AC just to see if the extra cooling would help. (I had no idea how it worked, didn't know if was separate or what) well just a minute or two after I did that the air from the front AC cooled down quite a bit. I tried it on a few other drives and got the same results, things work almost normal only when the rear AC is on.

So now after doing some research I see that the systems are connected so I know this has to mean something important I just have no idea what it could mean. Any ideas?

Well, I've heard that there is an evaporator temperature sensor on the front. But I don't know whether there is one on the rear as well, because in this case, it may determine the compressor to shut off when those sensors perceive that's too cold. Anyway, I would advise you go to a trusted air conditioning repairing service , in order to figure it out and prevent from further damages. Moreover, as they are professionals, they will troubleshoot the problem easier, and you'll get the AC repaired faster. I think that's more convenient to do like that.

Newer cars have sensors at the back too, so it really depends on your car. Also, while repairing, its good to get an aircon gas top up as well, to make sure you dont need to call up maintainence so often. Hope this helps!

Yeah i had to check, didnt know mine had a sensor! And on the note of aircon gas top up, usually it can last you for about a year or two, so its not really that big of a problem. But good point to bring up tho.
