Hi Volvoists: I have a Volvo V70 Station Wagon - front wheel drive - Turbo - 2001.

I went to drive away today and the gear shift would not move out of Park. I made sure to step on the brake pedal repeatedly while trying to shift. I turned on and off the car, etc., Finally, I just left it to idle for about 15 minutes, came back, and it worked fine!!!

Could it have possibly been frozen due to cold weather? It has certainly sat overnight in cold weather before. There has been no brake light on, and brakes have been working fine. There has been a high pitched squeeling sound whenever I take my foot off the brake while driving - this stops when I lightly tap the brake - but my mechanic says there is plenty left on the brakes.

Any thoughts?
