Hello all,

I'm riding a 1986 740, and just bought a 1998 V70 Cross Country. Should clear the 740 soon, and I'm looking for some people here in Northern Ontario who can indicate me some cool independant mechanics or parts sellers not too far from Sudbury. I come from Québec and need to get a good pitstop here!

My father repairs Volvo cars in Québec and I can also obtain parts for many 1980-1990's models.

Bye,

Th.

Hey, I'm in Sudbury too!

There is no Volvo dealer here anymore. Sudbury Fine Cars (Mercedes/Subaru) was the dealer for many years and still has mechanics familiar with Volvo but they are charging Mercedes rates!

I have a friend from High School (CEGEP) who runs a shop with his brother- Frank at Auto Lab 523-0740 - they are decent and honest. There are other choices in the South End that are familiar with Euro imports and most are OK.

Parts are from the usual local wholesale sources. Toronto is usually overnight shipment from the on-line suppliers.

Bonne chance!

Wow! thanks alot for your reply. I had the honour to be a client of this ex-Volvo dealer last year. First AND last time...

I'm mostly looking for used parts. Right now (and this could be the subject of a new thread soon), I have to find a driveshaft for my AWD V70 (1400$ for a new!), frequent dilemma from what I read. Rear shocks are also hard to find used for the AWD, and are really expensive new.

Just had an invitation to Buffalo in march, so if anybody there has parts or a fine V70 AWD I could be interested!

I too am in Northern Ontario. Timmins.
I just purchased a 1998 V70xc.
I thought Sudbury fine cars was going to be my parts location... do they still stock parts.
I am looking for a mechanic here in Timmins to do my maintenance.
Lets keep in touch so that we can find where the best place for parts might be. Also, I am considering NorthBay for service since I understand there is a shop there that will still work on Volvo's

Parolin in North Bay has a good reputation. Friends have dealt with them and they do stock parts.

Sudbury Fine Cars has not repped Volvo for almost 5 years but some of their mechanics still drive old Volvos. Call service and speak to Karen about what they still can do.

Most of the big parts suppiers can get common items. Dealer-only, special parts are not usually stocked by dealers, but ordered from Toronto overnight.

Timmins is mostly pickup trucks, but I have seen some cars, even imports! Ask around and see where others get their service done.

BHart: Thank you very much about the information regarding Parolin in North Bay.
I will look into this.
Is this where you order your parts from?.... or do you also have preferred location in Toronto to order parts?

BTW: might you have a service manual (garage manual) on hand, electronic copy or know a site where I can get one. I have been looking around and have had no luck.
My mechanic is willing to work on the car for me, but really wants a manual.
If I have to, I will purchase one direct from Volvo. I am looking for a V70xc (Cross Country) manual for a 1998.
Thank you...

TH93: did you ever look for or find rear shocks for the v70 xc.
I have a 1998 and am interested in a set as well. I believe I need self leveling from what I have found out so far.
Also looking for a rack and pinion since I appear to have some leaks as well as a front driver side quarter panel inside cover.
Any leads?
Please and thank you

Quite certain I will need the Rack, Rear Shocks and inside cover.
Have not had chance to look at the car in the past few months, so am not sure yet.
Also looking for the cause to cylinder 2 and 4 misfire. Hope it is just the wires or the distributor cap but can't be sure yet till I look more closely.
Do you have leads for me?

Side note for us Northerners.
I know Northbay has Parolin T E & Son Motor Car Sales for Volvo parts, but has anyone ordered through fcpgroton.com in the states?
So far, phone and email service have been great. Prices sound to be best around.
How about delivery? That is my final concern. They claim the $30 or so for shipping is door to door, but I am wondering about HST and duty charges.
Has anyone here purchase through them?
What am I up against?

Answer to my own question...
Sorry to say, as much as I want to promote local purchases, I have received unexpectedly great pricing, support and delivery from FCP Groton in the USA. Buy Car Parts - Aftermarket Auto Parts - Volvo Parts, VW Parts, Audi Parts, BMW Parts, Mercedes Parts, Porsche Parts
In short ... PCV kit (not cheap in itself and includes the intake manifold gasket), throttle body gasket, tune up kit (including cables "bougicords", plugs "volvo", distributor cap "bosh", rotor "bosh" and air filter "Mann")... Lets top it off.... Has anyone here looked at replacing your rear shock absorbers on the 1998 V70-XC AWD is best price of $350 refurb and $660 each new... ps: this is for the self leveling... which I purchased in this test run with FCP.
All in all, PCV, car tune up kit new rear shock absorbers, delivery, complete... door to door...ordered friday... I had them in my hands the following Thursday at 9am...
How much... go ahead... guess.. or just keep reading...
All in all... to purchase Canadian I was being quoted $1200 to $1300 as my starting prices and these did not specify all I was looking for....the tune up kit was an after thought and the fact that the PCV kit inclueded everything, that kind of kicked the crap out of purchasing all parts individually.
I wish I could have purchased Canadian and local, but I can not affort to look at spending $400 plus to do so... can you? if yes... good show ... keep it up... :)
Seriously, I have to honestly say... my first experience in dealing with FCP Groton was GREAT!!!!!
I am definitively going to have to keep them in my contact list for other items as they are needed.
Granted, I was looking for oil at the same time and for that I went with tried trusted and true Canadian Tire since they have Shell Rotella T5 Synthetic blend 0W/40 at $37.99 per 4.4L.
All round, I was under $1,000 for all that I wanted to gt done before the snow is here to stay.
Hats off to our friends across the boarder.
Thanks FCP. My new friend over there is Rob R. He was fast, knowledgeable, helpful, informative and most of all... friendly and a pleasure to deal with.
By the way, all prices he gave me truly arrived at my door with no added taxes, duty charges or any unexpected surprises. He gave me a price, I gave the credit card info and that was that. What a great experience. Lets talk up our locals and see if they are willing and able to give us the same. I would love to keep my shopping local, but I don't know about the rest of you, I just can't justify spending additional $$$ simply to help their economy. I will help Canada any way I can, but we have to do it to do it together. :)
That is enough from me for tonight.
Please RSVP if you have additional info to add.
I would be interested in staying in touch with each other and comparing prices.
If anyone is interested, please rsvp with an email address and we can look at starting up a parts price list....
Thanks to all :) enjoy the Volvo, the ride... and sooner than not... the snow..... knowing your Volvo is keeping you safe on the roads :)

Admin... if you are still there....
I am needing antifreeze and finding it tough to get my hands on.
Thinking of Peak extended life antifreeze and coolant. It is HOAT and that is the closest I can find to volvo brand or Zerex G05.
I know others has suggested Peak Long Life, but I can only get Peak Extended Life at Canadian Tire.
Do you have any knowledge or suggestions in this area?
Thanks
