I am considering purchasing 1995 850 volvo, car is beautiful inside and out, bad news 210000 miles and check engine light is on and there is an antifreeze smell when i turn on the heat.....is this worth $1000.00???? It drove nice besides a rattle in front end, sounded like something plastic loose. I also looked at 94 940 about same miles, about same price but that year seemed more solid...does anyone know of volvo jump down in quality between those two years??? I prefer the strip down 2004, felt like nothing could kill it and drove smooth as pudding but the 95 was a beautifully clean car. thanks

A mechanic told me that the 850 consumes oil!
The 940 engine is a probed engine.
It goes back to the 240 model.
Also the 940 is a rear wheel drive, with plenty of space to work on the engine.
The 850 is a 5 cylinder engine and it is front wheel drive. Very cramped to work on the engine.
hector.

If you smell antifreeze when the heater is on, it's almost guaranteed that the heater core is bad....or at least a hose going to it is bad.

Personally, I'd go for the 940. Both cars have a good reputation for being bullet proof. But the 940 is more bullet proof than the 850. Those old red block 4 bangers are just awesome.

I would go 850. Have 3 of them in the family, 1 turbo, 2 non. Also A V70 T5. Love them all. Just bought a '94 850 with 210k on the 2.4L. It runs awesome. No oil usage. Picked it up for $1300. All maintenance done. Think if you could get it for $750 or so, it would be a good deal.
