After I drive through a puddle (and there are plenty here in Seattle), or occasionally while driving in slushy snow, my car starts to make a high pitched sound, that stops after a short time. No vibration, no change with speed change, no variation in the tone. It just starts and goes away mysteriously.

I've asked local Volvo specialty mechanics as well as the dealer and no one seems to know what it is. I've seen some references to it online, but nobody locally has heard of the problem or knows what causes it.

Theories? Fixes? Am I all alone with this one?

My experience...

I had the same problem. When driving in hard rain and puddles, my 2000 xc70 would just scream. I took it to the mechanic and they didn't find a problem. Then about a year later, I saw something hanging down under the car. I took it in and it turned out that I needed a new Center Exhaust Support - cross member. This is hard part to find but once replaced, the screaming went away. The part number is 9474333. Hope this helps.
