Not to long ago someone gave me a 1996 850. It was ragged out, teenagers drove it for a few years. It had the usual problems, smoked a bit, lost coolant and burned a little oil. Transmission slips a bit when taking off. anyway yesterday it refused to start. Turns over and chugs but no go. Anyone have a clue where I should start looking? I do all of my own stuff on my other cars, american made older models, change plugs, coil packs, etc but have never owned a volvo and don' know where to start.

You start in the same place on a Volvo. You check to see if you have spark at the end of the ignition wires. You check the fuel rail to see if it's building pressure or pull a plug and see if it's "wet" from fuel.

Have you tried to give it a shot of starting fluid to see if it runs a bit ??

When you turn the key to "ON" can you hear the fuel pump run for two or three seconds ??
