hey there...
i just bought a 1996 960 with 166000 miles. really great shape...love the car but never had a volvo. i have some questions...
1. what maintainance should i perform?
2. how can i disable the ac from turning off when the engine is under a load...the ac turns off when accelerating or going up a hill...can this be disabled?
3. any other things i should know about the problems or greatness of the vehicle...

Your car is one of the more luxury models of volvo congratulations,,, the owners manual indicate you when is the best time to check your car, the model of your engine were is 2.4i, 2.5i or 3.0i I have some information, please indicated tne model

First off whenever I start to have to rely on a vehicle I check the belts. Ask when they where last replaced and most importantly @ what mileage they where replaced at. That in combination with your Volvo user manual maintance section you should be all set to go. If it where my 960, I'd personally take a look at the Timing belt/chain first over all other things. I am unaware of your possible knowledge of engines but if that belt/chain breaks and your engine's not a reciprocating engine. Your in for a major repair, not to mention costly one.

I hope this helps you. I've been thinking about 960's for awhile myself since my 93 940 base model is practically maxed out in the modifications I can do to it as far as performance enhancements.
