There was a documentary produced in 2005 called The Death of the Electric Car and it highlights how GM, with the help of 'Big Oil', killed the EV 1 electric sports car of the late 90s through 2002. There is a lot of performance potential from pure electric or hybrid electric cars; they may be the way of the future.
