Volvo 240, how to test a power stage ignition amplifier?

Car runs but when put into drive the engine quits.

Thanks for the web. It was a little hard to understand. I think I may have found the problem, the Air Mass Meter plastic elbow tube was disconnected. It has two clamps and one end had came lose and was coming off. I will drive it this week and see if that is the problem. Thanks!
