Hello.
I'm new to this forum and would appreciate your help on the issue I have on my recently purchased volvo 960 1994 3.0L automatic.
The shift handle needs replacement but I wasn't able to pull it out. Is there any trick to it or should I simply use force? Am I missing anything?

REMOVING GEAR SHIFT KNOB
ADIS instruction:
Pull knob straight upward from the lever.
Considerable force is required to remove the knob.

Bill's instruction:
As above but do not lean forward over the knob as, eventually, it will come off with a rush and hit anything in its path. (Gear knob 1 - teeth 0).

Thank you for the detailed reply. Just to confirm: Do I need to remove the button first (item 29 in the picture you posted), or simply pull the knob upwards as is?

Yes: You should remove that button(29) as well as the other one(31), that way it will be easier to pull the the knob upwards.Remember,you will find some resistance when pulling out the knob,but that is expected. I would use a spray like WD40 or silicone(wait a couple of hours) that would help when pulling the knob.

It's done. The WD40 probably helped.
There was actually no need to remove the button (item 29). I removed it before I went to work but noticed it's not interfering with anything and would have been a pain to re-install because of the spring.
I don't have the override option (item 31), just the cap (31a) so all I had to do was pull the handle straight up with considerable force as you suggested. For anyone with the override option I would guess they would need to disconnect the connector from the bottom before pulling the handle out.
No big deal really.
