Hey guys,

This is my first post in here. I've been a fan of the Volvo 1800 for a while now. I know they're not fast cars, but I think they are unbelieveably nice. They have some of the nicest curves I've ever seen on any car, ever. Personally I think it's up there with the Aston Martin DB5, but that's just me. I saw one in person last night for the first time in a very long time, and somehow I just fell in love. And now I need to have one. I've been saving up for a second car for a while now, and I probably still won't be able to buy it for another few months, but that's a good thing, because I do my research before I buy a car.

I currently drive a 2006 Mercedes E55, and I knew EVERYTHING about that car before I bought it. I mean everything. I think a car is a huge investment and I'm not about to spend that kind of money unless I know exactly what I'm spending it on.

I was hoping you guys could tell me the differences between the years and the different models. The only one I know I'm not interested in is thr ES, it might serve a purpose, but this is my second car, and I want it to be nice. I live in Los Angeles, in case it matters. I don't want a stick shift; if I'm driving a car because of it's looks I want to be able to relax when doing it.

So I guess this is what I need from you guys:

What are the major differences between the years and the models?
How much would adecent one cost?
Are they expensive to maintain?
How hard is it to find them for sale?
And anything else you think I should know.

probably the best info for deciding ... personally I like models up to 69 ... the interior in the later model and the side markers and gas trap are less attractive to me .

Thanks a lot for the links. I checked them out and I came to a conclusion... There is no way that I can make this decision online. The details are waaaay too small to be properly seen in pictures. Is there anyone in the Los Angeles area that would be willing to meet up with me to let me check their car out. I've never even been inside of one, to be honest I've only seen 2 in person and one was driving at the time. lol. I'll come to you and I'll buy lunch... lol.

Thanks a lot for the help. I'd love for this car to be fast but I already have a fast car and I'm really hoping for this to be a rather cheap investment that I can improve over time, but don't get me wrong, I don't want to buy a POS, just something that isn't perfect. lol

Buy the best you can afford. Let someone else pay for the restoration cost, then buy it for market value.

It costs as much to restore an Aston Martin as an 1800 (if they're rough) but you'll never get the money back on a Volvo - sad fact. If you just want one because it's a nice car (and an automatic) you'll want to go for an 1800E. Then you'll have 'modern' interior, fuel injection, automatic and possibly AC.

Ok my 67 is on its way ... it is suppose to be a white car but my VIN is weird and I am not sure of the actual color (see my other post), so I am thinking of getting a new paint/different color.

I tried to look for a 3D version of the car to do some rendering but no luck ... so I used an image from the web ... After having some fun to the point that I got scared (see pink model) I think I am going to go with a "titanium silver" color.

What do you guys think?

Personally, if it was my car, I'd go with the sam silver that Aston Martin DB5s are painted with, and the last color I'd do is black, it masks all the curves.

The gold metallic for sure, the grey/silver is good but getting a popular choice for modernising them. I think the darker they get the less outstanding the lines are.

What did you use to coloutr them like that - its brilliant.

On a personal preference you missed red! a nice cranberry pearl with the white/cream interior would also be good

As for which model to choose from. You have plenty of choice:
Jensen Model to 1963 is the oldest and I reckon the most collectible. Its also the prettiest.
The 1968/69 model was the lowest production runs so that makes them desirable but
The 69 + ones with the stonking 2.0litre donk is the best perfromance
and the late model ES has a big fanbase and a more practical car if you plan to use it for more than just show or sunday drives.

Given my username my obvious preference is for the original - P1800 - with no S and no E
