I have a 98 V70 and i was wondering if there is anyway that i can put a roof rack on it. There are two long rubber inserts that run along the roof of the car but there seems to be no way of pulling them out. I just dont know if i have to option of mounting a roof rack on.

yea i know mine doesnt have the volvo roof rack that comes with the car so there arent those two bars running along the sides of the roof. Instead there are two rubber inserts that run along where the roof racks would be. I was just wondering if these are supposed to come off in place of an aftermarket roof rack such as a thule, etc.

If you have the rubber track cap things that run the length of the roof you should be able to install factory rails no problem. I did this on my 98 v70. I bought a used set of rails of ebay for $150 and had them installed in about 45 min.

This is just the rails so you still need to get some kind of load bars either factory or yakima or something. I actually use 2x4s and u-bolts.

@redcar when you installed the roof rails did you have to drill any holes because I've read many sites that say I would have to drill through the roof. Also how do you take off those rubber strips that run the length of the car?

no drilling. The rails were used factory rails that came with mounting hardware. The rubber/plastic track cap snaps out and there are threaded holes there for mounting. The plastic cap has to be cut with a hack saw where the mounts attach and the rest gets snapped back in. The directions also said you might have to remove the trim along the windshield, but I did not have to and am not sure why it would be needed.

I'll try to attach the instructions I used to this post. The instructions were a little different from the actual parts I ended up with, but they helped.

redcar: i hope to get euro rails from a local salvage yard. if you're still checking this, can you explain how you used the 2x4s and u-bolts -- or even post a pic? Do you think this set-up would support a total or other hard storage unit?

I don't have any pics and I have since moved on to yakima load bars, but when I used the 2x4s I just ran them past the rails and and two holes on either side of the rails. You have to get u-bolts that are wide enough and long enough to go from the underside of the rail and up through the holes in the 2x4s. It's ugly, but it worked. The 2x4s did sag over the coarse of the summer and I suppose ultimately are not as strong as the load bars you buy.

Thank you Redcar. I found some euro rails at a local salvage yard for a 2000 V70. JimKW on another thread suggests up to the 2000 V70 rails would work on my 96 850. The trim strip on my roof though is not the rubber with the caps -- it seems like a loose, thin metal strip with black caulking on either side. don't know how I'd get it back on without caulking. Makes me think maybe I can't put these on my 850? Anyone know whether all 850s are compatible with factory rails? Hate to invest in the rails and strip the trim and then realize it's a no go . . .

did much more reading and got lucky with 2000 V70 roof rails at a salvage yard today. black molding came with. little embarrassed to say i don't understand the link to the instructions above -- though they look great.

the rails i got are completely intact -- and the baggie of bolts not nearly as plentiful with any of those other pieces in the instructions. help? do i need to take the bars apart as well as take the molding off?

sorry to post on a couple threads here! there are so many good ones. thanks for any help. hope i can do this myself with minimal experience/tools but lots of dedication.

thanks.
