2005 S60R: Drove down the road today, thank god only 1/2 a mile, and SOMETHING broke. Loud crack, followed by what sounded like metal dragging on the ground. Nothing hanging. Hobbled back slowly, with a combination of scraping, clunking, loud metal on metal, and popping. Car's a 6 speed manual, 90K. I know I'll have to have it towed, just not sure where. Any ideas on what this is? I jacked up the front end and crawled under to see if there was anything obviously broken; there wasn't.

That's a tough call over the internet. Just get a reputable shop to take a look at it and don't be afraid to get a second opinion.

Ended up calling my dependable Volvo Mechanic, who said it sounded like transmission and told me not to send it to him, as he doesn't do them. Called my transmission mechanic, who seconded that, and accepted it. He just called me yesterday; transfer case blew out. The sound was the rear shaft flopping around in what used to be the T.C.
I'm getting reacquainted with my 98 C70 with 175K Miles. So glad I didn't trade her in when I bought the R, since she will be my daily driver once again for a while until the S60 is back up.
