I know people have probably asked this before but I couldn't come up with a search term that found me anything, so....
I have an opportunity to buy a 1997 850 GLT with about 118,000 miles on it. I've driven it and it runs out nice, everything is very clean, and the car appears to have been take good care of. The problem is that the dealer isn't asking what I think is actually *enough* for the car if it is in as good of condition as it appears to be; he is asking $3,900.
I'm pretty mechanically inclined and can do most normal things like change brakes, ball joints, and the like. I could probably change a timing chain if it came to it too, but I'd like to avoid getting something I'll need to do some transmission or engine work -- I have a Saab 900 that is torn down in the garage right now while I rebuild the cylinder head and I don't have room for another non-running car!
Are there some things I should check for to make sure there aren't any major mechanical problems lurking just around the corner?
Thanks!
Todd
