I was recently gifted a 1983 Volvo 242DL station wagon that's in surprisingly good shape, a super lucky find. I've been thinking about getting a diesel car to run on biodiesel, and always wanted a to do this with a station wagon. The question is this:

How plausible would it be to replace the gas engine in this car with a diesel engine?

I know there are similar body styles with diesel engines that could theoretically fit, so it's just a matter of compatibility. Would I have to replace the transmission as well, or any other parts? I'm new to mechanics, but I will be getting help on this from somebody who knows this car inside and out. If anybody knows the best way to go about this, most importantly which engines could be compatible, I'd love some help.

Thanks a lot,
