continuous clicking noise from front left

My 1999 v70awd XC has a continuous clicking, which appears to come from the left front (driver side). The vehicle has 180000 miles, new rotors & brake pads 400 miles ago. The axle boots are good, but the right side is loose on the outside end. The clicking speed up with the speed of the car. Has been off & on for 6 months. Sounds like a piece of tin riding on a cog as the cog turns.

Would this be a worn universal joint on the axle?

It could be a worn CV joint but they are usually only noisy under power at full steering lock. You say the boot is loose, can you pull it back and see inside? If so, there's your problem.

If you just (400 mi) had the brakes done, it could be someone bent the brake splash shield on the back of the rotor. This could rub on the turning brake rotor.

Is your ABS working? There is a cog in that area that turns and provides a signal for the ABS. If it was rubbing, the ABS warning lamp would probably be on.

ABS light is on. I see the cogs on the back side of the wheel assembly. There appears to be a sensor on the top. What & where would something be touching? Is it possible to raise the car & place it in drive. Also, the noise was prior to new brakes & rotors.

Do NOT put the car in Drive unless it is on a hoist. The Cross country is AWD and drive will be put to the other wheels.

There might be some info here; Volvo Cross Country Resources: How-To Guides

The sensor might be rubbing the ABS wheel and have caused the sensor to fail. This could be the cause of the light being on.

You will want to get this sorted since I think the AWD takes it's readings from the ABS sensors and could also keep the 4x4 from working properly (assuming you're unlucky enough to be in snow or very fortunate and driving on a beach).

I replaced my ABS Wheel sensor because the light was on also on my 1998 volvo v70....problem solved. I got a great deal on a online store (qeautoparts.com). ask for a guy named cris, he truly went the extra mile to get the part shipped asap. the best of luck with your car.

I was the front CV joint on the drive shaft to the rear axle.
