1994 volvo 940 is overheating

Hello All,

I was recently given a Volvo 940. It's in pretty good shape, no dents or dings. Has 200,000 miles. The only thing is... it overheats. I put it in the shop and they replaced the Coolant Reservoir. I thought that solved the problem, but last night, after driving it for approx 10 min, the "temp" needle begin to rise. The car overheated while I was on the highway. Thank God I was able to make it to my destination and back home. However I did have to stop and put some more Anti-freeze in it, because the reservior was empty. I didn't see any leaks! But once I bled the air out of the system via the Reservoir cap, a little antifreeze began to flow back into the bottom of the reservoir.
I'm taking the car back to the shop today, but wanted to know if anyone has experienced this problem and/or has a possible fix. Any assistance is welcomed.

Is the water pump functioning correctly? Once you filled back up did it continue to overheat?

Oiy. Indeed I'd check water pump first. Also -- is there any white smoke out the tailpipe (head gasket issues) or coolant in the oil /oil in the coolant ? Do either the oil or the coolant look like a milkshake (do not drink)?

Do you still have heat in the heater? If the pump is not turning, you probably won't have flow for normal heat.

Is your coolant good for cold weather? Not sure where you live but it is possible, with poor quality coolant, to freeze the rad in cold weather and have no flow through the radiator. This would cause the engine to overheat.

Lastly, I'd second the votes for headgasket.

ck thermostat it could be malfunctioning. cheep fix only around $13.00 plus gasket. also while car is running you could disconnect top and bottom radiator hoses and run a water hose to top radiator hose and see if water is circulating. that is the shade tree method but it works!
