Xc90 drive train problem diagnosis

Just picked up a 2003 xc90 with a "bad transmission" for 800$. About to tear into it, but before I do, I'm hoping someone out there can give me some clues about how to diagnose the problem. It is making a lot of noise when I put it in gear, and it could be the angle gear, differential, or the transmission. I know these have a history of transmission problems and I'm willing and able to replace it if I have to, but it would be nice if it were the angle gear instead. How can I test it or figure out ? Anybody have an idea? Also, if it is the transmission, any tips about whether there are certain brands/models to avoid, or tips to do a better repair? Thanks.
