Volvo has revealed a pair of new concept cars previewing how the brand’s future small cars will look.

Volvo calls them the 40 series concepts, both of which show how Volvo will move forward both in design terms and in technology. Both of the cars ride on the Compact Modular Architecture, a scalable platform that will underpin all of Volvo’s small cars. The 40.1 concept previews what we will see from the new XC40, while the smaller, more sedan-like 40.2 concept shown with a blue backdrop is previewing the new S40.

When its range of global small cars officially debuts, one pure electric vehicle will be available along with a plug-in hybrid option. Volvo wants to offer an electrified version of every vehicle it sells and is aiming to move 1 million electrified vehicles annually by 2025.

'By taking a modular approach to both vehicle architecture and powertrain development we have succeeded in leap-frogging many of the players in the premium segment,' said Dr Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research & Development. 'Our new battery electric powertrain variant opens yet another exciting chapter in the unfolding Volvo story.'

Besides the technology packed into the powertrain, Volvo will also outfit its new small cars with advanced safety features and new connectivity services. Without going into detail, Volvo also mentioned that some autonomous driving technology will also be part of its new small car lineup.

The new 40 series vehicles are expected to begin production in 2017.
