Fuel filter

Hey all.
I recently had my 1998 2.4ltr AWD Volvo (V70) tuned up but as to the fuel filter, I was told that there isn't one to replace as part of the tune up but the one in the tank by the fuel pump. Is that so and how long does it last? My Volvo has about 74k miles on it.

There is an intake strainer in the tank but it's not normally a problem.

Find a better shop to work on your car!

hello and thank you.
i guess there is one outside the tank after all.
and it might need to go. i tried to read from the links that you gave me and seems to be by the pump in the back. i wonder if i can get to it from under the car or from a trap door that i think that i saw some time ago in the "trunk" of the wagon under the trap door and carpet...
never ventured into that....
there's also seem to be a date on the filter from the picture of the new ones, again from your link. i guess once i locate it, i could look at said date to see how old it is, if i'm correct....
thank you again, any thoughts on above would be appreciated.

hi there and thank you for the reply. funny that you mentioned it, since this was posted about 6 months or so ago, but the car went recently in for an oil change and while there they replaced it for me through the trap door in the cargo area if i got it right. the price was reasonable so i didn't have to get involved. of course in the process they found a leak on the oil pan gasket so it has to go back in for a $450 gasket (set???) replacement. I guess that's life....
well have a Merry Christmas and thanks again.
PS.
i believe the emergency brake will need to tackled next since it has to be pulled pretty high before it does anything...

Hello, Be advised that the emergency/parking brake is a known weak spot in these cars. It is TOTALLY WORTH IT to inspect BOTH sets (left and right) of parking brake shoes. It's easy to simply adjust the lever. All you need is a 10mm wrench. The adjustment nut is under the lever's boot and hard plastic shield. INSPECT THE SHOES FIRST. Consider this a Christmas gift. Hello Kira and as always, I thank you for getting back to me.
I will do that. To be honest I never looked into the emergency brake shoes location or how to inspect them on the V70.
Any hints?

Do these pads wear out much since usually the emergency brake is applied after the vehicle is stopped and parked? (Unless of course one drives with it on....)

As to the oil pan gasket that I was telling you. It was replaced yesterday and the car is going to stay in the shop til Tuesday due to the Holiday because the mechanic said that the sealant from VOLVO, takes a long time to dry, and he didn't want to put new oil until totally dry.

So no VOLVO this weekend, though I'm working anyhow, and we still have another car. But better safe than sorry, I guess....

Hello, Remove the rear brake discs to see the e-brake shoes. Backing off the adjustment screw at the lever can facilitate the removal of the discs. The rear disc has the e-brake drum cast into it. It's one single piece. HNY Kira

Hello again.
Well the car is back from the mechanic...
Anyway, so if I got it right, I have to release tension from the emergency brake by giving it slack from the handle adjustment? and then remove the rear disks and check them? I saw someplace some adjustor on the emergency brakes themselves. Do they need to be loosened up as well to remove the rotors? Also is there anything else holding the rotors in there?
I would think that the calipers will need to come out as well.
Anyway, no emergency, no pun intended...

Hello, Sorry for the delay in answering. I'll blame the holidays. I was abbreviated in my description. The caliper has to be removed to get the disc off. There'll be one lone fastener (phillips screw or possibly a hex headed bolt) holding it. Replace that fastener if it gets at all burred. Use anti-seize on any bolt/screw you remove. It'll make things easier next time. Kira
