Question motor oil for '99 V70 133K+

I bought a used V70 wagon a few months ago and am ready to change the oil. I read the Volvo owner's manual online that recommends 10W/30 every 5K and to buy an oil with an API seal.

What oil brand is good for a high mileage Volvo? And at my level of milaeage should I be changing the oil every 3K instead of 5K? The owner's manual only gives maintenance recommendations up to 105K miles.

Hello, Is your car is turbocharged? I assume it is with a 5,000 mi. OCI. If it is consider one of two of the more popular for turbocharged applications; Castrol 0W-30 European formula and Mobil1 0W-40 European formula. These are A3,B3 oils and handle the high temperatures created by turbochargers. There are others on the market. These two are more readily available. A non-turbo does well with 5W-30 or 10W-30 conventional oil with 7,500 mile oil change intervals. Don't overlook the transmission fluid. The claim that the fluid in the transmission is "lifelong" is foolish. If your fluid is at all black or burnt smelling, change it completely. Your 4 speed takes inexpensive Dex-Merc fluid. Good luck with your car, I had one and it was good. Merry Christmas, Kira +

Thanks for the suggestions!
I think it's turbo, it's a GLT. I'm sorry I don't know what OCI means, I am pretty new to DIY car care.

Hello, GLTs are turbocharged. I wish I could recommend an illustrated book to show you what's involved. Turbochargers are little fans which compress air. The air they compress can carry more fuel into the engine than normal. This makes the engine more powerful. The engine runs hotter because it's burning more fuel. The fan is powered by a turbine (hence the word "turbo") which is turned by the flow of exhaust gas. This gas is very hot and the oil which is sent to the turbocharger to cool it gets very hot. You need an oil which handles heat well. There are oils which have a service rating verified by a European organization; the ACEA. Castrol 0W-30 and Mobil1 0W-40 oils have an ACEA A3,B3 rating. It's on the back of the bottle. There are others on the market but I want to keep this brief. Go buy some and put it in your car. People GENERALLY leave this good quality oil in their cars for 6,000 to 7,500 miles. If other people are doubtful about this information, don't listen to them. See to the renewal of your automatic transmission fluid too. Which transmission do you have? What year is your car? How many miles are on it? Oh yeah, OCI means Oil Change Interval. Don't install cheap oil at a quick change place. The people who work at those places are nasty and stupid. Kira
